The SedaplusVET (VSF770) is temporarily discontinued. We have been unable to identify a source of valerian that passes our stringent product specifications for purity. We will be introducing a reformulated product in the near future. Until that time, some veterinarians are using a couple of products from our human line:
Melaton-3
Dosage:
Cats: ½ capsule in the morning
Dogs: 1 capsule a half hour before bed
Or
PharmaGABA-100
Dosage:
Cats: ¼ cap daily
Dogs: 1 cap per 25 lbs body weight daily
Horses: 4-10 caps daily
Sedative-like herbs for restful sleep and relaxation
Anxiety is a common occurrence in animals of all species. The stress of traveling or being confined in a home or a barn all day without exercise can contribute to poor rest. Although rest is important to animals, their human's schedules or the animal's inability to sleep well can result in sleep deprivation. Horses in busy barns or on heavy show schedules may not get the rest they need.
Supplementation with botanicals such as valerian, Rhodiola, passionflower, and hops; relaxants like GABA and sleep-inducing melatonin; and neurotransmitter precursors to melatonin like L-tryptophan and 5-HTP can be helpful in retraining the nervous system to produce restful and restorative sleep.
Alone and in combination with hops (Humulus lupulus), valerian (Valeriana officinalis) promotes the ability to initiate sleep and enhance sleep quality. Valerian stimulates GABA (a brain chemical that causes relaxation) release, which acts in combination with valerian's regulatory effect on the nervous system to cause relaxation.
Hops and chamomile (Matricaria recutita) are indicated for promoting restful, restorative sleep and are also helpful for stress-related gastrointestinal upset. Chamomile has been shown to reduce levels of ACTH, a hormone from the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal gland to secrete its hormones. Chamomile also appears to increase the effects of GABA. A similar calming effect is also attributed to passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), which is indicated for general nervous agitation, including the inability to sleep due to an overactive mind.
The restorative sleep attributes of SedaplusVET are further strengthened by the central nervous system adaptogen Rhodiola rosea, which decreases physiological responses to stress and slows down the overactive mind for a restful sleep. Rhodiola has also been shown to inhibit stress-induced depletion of important brain neurotransmitters. The adaptogenic properties of Rhodiola are attributed primarily to this ability to influence the levels and activity of neurotransmitters and amino acids that mimic the effect of opiates in the brain, such as beta-endorphins.
